Benchtop composting bins are a great option if you want to get into composting but don't know where to start or don’t have room in your garden. They are also an excellent option for the environmentally conscious. Food scraps placed in our landfills are harming the environment with the release of methane gases. The general composting process decreases that dramatically but the bokashi technique decreases those gases even further. The methane-producing microbes will not live in this system as the pH is low, making this bin an incredibly environmentally friendly product. Your plants will love it, and so will the environment.
This system is compact but holds a massive 14litres worth of scraps (larger than your household bucket), and it will transform all your food waste. Unlike traditional composting, the Bokashi system can also compost items including cooked food, meat, fish and cheese.
Bokashi is a Japanese term meaning ‘fermented organic matter’. The airtight sealing system ensures that the fermentation process uses the Bokashi bacteria as a compost activator and has been specifically designed to initiate the breakdown of organic waste in the home.
This system is generally pleasant-smelling, so you can keep the units on the bench or under the sink. Using the compost accelerator spray will speed up the fermentation of organic matter. Once treated in the composter, the material can then be safely dug into your garden. It also features a tap, making it easy to decant the liquid fertiliser concentrate, which is then diluted into a nutrient-dense liquid food for the garden.
Because the fermentation process is relatively quick, it's a good idea to have two units as it only takes about three weeks to complete the process, depending on the size of your scraps.
