Post-Rain Recovery

Rainy day? What can you still get done….

Rain doesn’t mean your gardening has to stop. In fact, wet weather is the perfect excuse to tackle those indoor and prep jobs that set you up for success next season.

What to do when it’s wet

Fertilse your lawn

A light drizzle is actually ideal for applying lawn fertiliser. The moisture helps carry nutrients down into the soil and reduces the risk of burning the grass. Just avoid doing this in heavy rain, where nutrients can wash away before they’re properly absorbed. Our top choice is Oderings Lawn Replenish. This release nutrients slowly over three months and offer great value in the long run.

Weeding: Rain softens the soil, which makes it the perfect time to get on top of weeds. You’ll find they come out much more easily, roots and all, which means less chance of them popping back up again. It’s one of the most satisfying jobs to tick off on a damp day. Our top weeding tool is the original weeder, this easy weeder just slides into the ground, hooks under the weed and pulls it straight up

Perfect indoor gardening jobs

Re-pot houseplants
If your indoor plants are looking a bit tired or roots are circling the pot, now’s a great time to refresh them. Gently loosen the roots, step up to a slightly larger pot, and use fresh potting mix like Oderings Housplant mix to give them a new lease on life. It’s a small job that makes a big difference.

Start seeds indoors
Growing your own plants from seed is a fun, rewarding, and cost-effective way to expand your garden. You don’t have to stop growing just because it’s wet outside. Sowing seeds indoors on a bright windowsill or in a warm spot gives you a head start on the season. Herbs, leafy greens, and early veggies all do well start this way. We recommend sowing root crops direct into the garden.

Plan your next garden
Rainy days are perfect for slowing down and thinking ahead. Take the time to sketch out your garden, play with colour combinations, and decide what you’d like to grow next. A bit of planning now makes planting season much more rewarding.

Clean and organise your tools
It’s easy to overlook but keeping tools clean and sharp makes every job in the garden easier. Give your secateurs a sharpen with a diamond sharpener, clean and sterilise gardening tools off any dirt or rust with Forsana Plant Care Plus, Hydrogen Peroxide, or tidy up the shed so everything’s ready to go when the weather clears.

Top tip: Try to stay off garden beds when the soil is really wet. Walking on soggy soil compacts it, which makes it harder for roots to grow and for water to drain properly later on.
