Frost Protection

Banner Image
As autumn deepens and nights begin to cool, it is time to start thinking about frost protection. Early frosts often arrive with little warning, catching tender growth off guard and slowing plants just as they should be settling in for winter. Taking steps now helps protect vulnerable plants and sets the garden up to come through the colder months in better shape.

Understanding the different frost protection options available makes it easier to respond as temperatures drop, whether you are protecting vegetables, young shrubs or frost-tender ornamentals.

Recommended Frost Protection Products

Oderings recommends these four effective ways to shield your plants from frost: Mikroclima, Frost Cloth, Caporgard, and Frost Cover Bags. Each has its benefits, offering varying levels of protection and convenience.

Mikroclima:

Mikroclima is a reliable, long-term option for gardeners wanting season-long protection. Made from a specially woven fabric, it is far sturdier than standard frost cloth and can last for many seasons. Because it allows light, air and water to pass through, Mikroclima creates a stable growing environment rather than simply acting as a cover. It can be left in place for extended periods and provides protection from light frosts through to around minus four degrees, while also offering shelter from wind, hail and heavy rain as conditions become more unsettled.

  • Durability: Lasts up to 10 seasons.
  • Use: Drape over plants and leave on all season; lets light through.
  • Protection: It is ideal for cold nights and allows your plant to receive light while protecting it from frost.
  • Tip: No need to remove or dry out; it’s designed for long-term use.

Frost Cloth:

Frost cloth is lightweight and easy to handle; it can be laid directly over plants or used over frames and hoops as needed. Frost cloth does not allow sunlight through, so it needs to be removed during the day to let plants dry and breathe. While it generally lasts only one to two seasons, it remains an effective and flexible option for protecting vegetable beds and smaller plants during early frosts.

  • Durability: Lasts 1-2 seasons.
  • Use: Drape over plants; remove and dry daily.
  • Protection: Best for light frosts (1°C - 4°C); double thickness for temperatures under 1°C.
  • Tip: Wrap tightly around plants, securing them with pegs for extra stability.

Vaporgard:

For gardeners looking for a spray-on solution, Vaporgard offers protection without the need for physical covers. This organic product forms a protective layer on foliage that reduces moisture loss and helps plants cope with freezing temperatures. Vaporgard protects down to around -3 degrees and can remain effective for several months, though new growth will need to be treated as it appears. It can also be used alongside frost cloth or Mikroclima for added protection as temperatures continue to fall.

  • Durability: 3-month protection per application (See tip).
  • Use: Dilute and spray onto plants.
  • Protection: Protects plants down to -3°C.
  • Tip: Reapply for any new foliage growth during the winter months.

Frost Cover Bags:

For targeted, convenient protection, Frost Cover Bags are an easy solution. Designed to slip over individual plants, they are ideal for young shrubs, citrus, tender ornamentals and potted plants that are most at risk as nights cool. Their fitted shape makes them quick to apply and remove, which is especially useful when frosts are intermittent. Reusable and easy to store, they are a practical addition to any autumn garden toolkit.

  • Durability: Lasts multiple seasons.
  • Use: Slip over individual plants; available in Medium and Large sizes
  • Protection: Shields from frost, snow and hail while still allowing air and moisture through
  • Tip: Use zip closure and drawstring bottom to secure tightly and prevent wind lift

Popadomes:

Easy-to-use Popadome tents are an environmentally friendly solution to garden pest control and frost protection. Use the fleece cover over the top of the Popadome frame for frost protection. The heavy-duty fleece protects your plants against frost and stops wind, hail, birds, and insects from damaging your plants. This strong reusable 60 gsm fleece is tear-resistant and is UV stabilised for long life. Different covers can be purchased to pop over the frame, these include bird netting, insect netting, or cloche cover for glasshouse-type insulation.

  • Durability: Lasts multiple seasons.
  • Use: Designed for Popadome frames; choose correct cover size to match your dome.
  • Protection: Shields from frost, wind, hail, birds and insects.
  • Tip: Secure tightly and align zip for full coverage and stability.

Frost protection isn’t about covering everything, but about understanding which plants need support and preparing ahead of time. With the right protection in place, the garden can ease into winter with confidence and resilience.
