Jobs and garden tasks for this month.

  • Now is the time to plant spring flowering bulbs. Chill freesias, ranunculus, hyacinth and anemones in the fridge for 4-6 weeks before planting. Other bulbs such as Tulips or Daffodils you can refrigerate but they only need 1-2 weeks.
  • Try something different and sow some salad greens. They are generally ready within 6 weeks. Try planting mesclun mix, radishes, rocket, baby beets and baby carrots. Also now is the time to sow bok choy or pak choi, spring onions and broad beans. For things like cabbage, broccoli and cauli you are best to buy them already started at your local Oderings to ensure you get a crop for early-mid winter harvest.
  • If you have a problem with codling moth don't leave the fruit to rot on the ground or you will get more of these pests next year. Pick them all up and throw them out or burn them.
  • Now that feijoa season is coming around the best time to pick them is when they are still firm.
  • Did you know now is the best time to plant and feed citrus. If you live in a climate that gets frost then you should protect young plants with micro-clima frost cloth. Feed your citrus with Oderings Citrus & Fruit Tree Fertiliser, the general rule of thumb is for every year of the plant you give them one handful of fertiliser.
