There are so many pressing jobs in the garden but the main one you should be looking at right now is sowing seed for your vegetable garden. At this time of year you can start sowing almost any of your veggies. Frost tender veggies such as basil, corn, peppers, courgette's, cucumbers, tomatoes and pumpkins should be started indoors or in a glasshouse this ensures survival from any late frosts. Veggies such as broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower, carrots, beets, silverbeet and spinach can be sown into trays or straight into a free draining sunny position in the garden.

Online you can view the latest Oderings Live & Grow magazine. I tried to email it out to everyone as discussed in the last email; unfortunately I need to learn a few more tricks before I get this right so please bear with me. In the mean time click here to view this online. Keep an eye out for page 16 where Julian Odering (who is Oderings South Island bedding plant grower since 1979) takes you through his simple steps for seed sowing success.

Also on page 4, Kaye Odering introduces our new seed tape range. They are simply brilliant, easy to use and save on wastage. The range includes spring onion, radish, spinach, red beet and 2 varieties of carrots. Simply dig a little trench, lay the seed tape, cover with a little soil and wait to grow. No more thinning... its so easy. Remember you can buy the entire range of Oderings seeds (including the seed tapes) in store or online at www.oderings.co.nz

Other jobs this month...

  • As pear and apple trees reach full bloom, spray with a fungicide to prevent early build-up of summer diseases.
  • Lift and divide any bulbs that may have become overcrowded.
  • Plant herbs now.
  • Early seasons strawberries start to ripen, an occasional liquid feed will help with plant health and fruit size. Cover with bird netting.
  • Summer flowering annuals should be thought about now. Team Lobelia with Petunias, Impatiens with Begonias or Bacopa with Salvias (to name a few). See below for some of the new spring 2009 bedding lines.
