Welcome Back
Did you know that autumn is known as natures planting time? Plants that are planted in autumn will have time to set out their roots and settle into place during winter and are then ready to give ample growth and flowering come spring and summer. To coincide with natures planting time we at Oderings have our once a year autumn sale (this year from the 10th - 26th of April) with genuine specials on every single plant with at least 20% off. Be sure to pop in and have a look, you wont be disappointed.
April In The Garden
Time To Plant...
- Plant trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals to ensure they establish before the winter. Plant daffodils, tulips and spring flowering bulbs by the end of the month.
- Seeds to sow now are lettuce, radish, rocket, baby beets, carrots (normal or baby), bok choy, pak choi, onions (red or normal), cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, parsnip, spinach, silverbeet and peas.
- Autumn and winter is the best time to plant broad beans and is also a great time to sow peas. Personally I grow my snow peas now so that in early spring when they are hugely expensive I have ample supply in my garden.
Time To...
- Fertilise lawns to make the most out of late season growth.
- Now is the best time to clean up your garden. Prune overgrown shrubs and perennials (especially those that have finished flowering), and keep on top of those weeds.
- Pumpkins stored for the winter should be checked. Remove any showing signs of decay.
Harvest...
- Time to harvest late apples, grapes, feijoa's and kiwifruit.
- Carefully dig up yams once the tops have wilted.
- Dig up and divide any rhubarb crowns that have become overcrowded.
Tip Of The Month...
- If you have planted all of your veggie crops for winter and you have some space left over the best thing to do is to plant some green crops. Green crops like blue lupin, mustard, wheat, oats or grain mix are suited to all gardens big or small. Early spring before the green crops flower you dig them into the soil this way they release high amounts of nitrogen into the soil. Green crops are low maintenance and are important to provide a rich source of nutrients and organic matter (thus improving the soils health).
