| The garden just loves October. It is such a great month with so many plants becoming available after a nice winters break. My main task in the garden this month is getting all my veggies and new seasons bedding plants into the garden. Veggies and herbs you should look at growing this month are; tomatoes capsicums, cucumbers, courgettes, pumpkins, eggplant, beans, passionfruit, watermelons, lemon grass, basil, coriander, tamarillos and much more; be cautious of late frosts. Kumara plants now become available for planting (North Island stores only). Plant these annuals in the next six weeks to have a beautiful display all Christmas and summer long; marigolds, petunias, salvias, impatiens, begonias, ageratum and lobelia to name a few. Odering are always trying to keep your garden new and exciting so check out our new bedding lines for spring 08 below. Remember some bedding plants will need to be covered if we have any late frosts. I don’t know about you but I hate prickles in my lawn, so this is my tip for the month; if you spray your prickle weed after it has flowered it would have already set the seed (or should I say the prickle) for next year. Prickle weed flowers late October so remember to spray your lawn this month. Other garden tasks for October Fertilise your lawn. For quick results use Oderings Lawn Fertiliser or for a lush & thicker lawn use Oderings Lawn Replenish. Sow any new lawns now. Lift and divide any bulbs that may have become overcrowded. Early seasons strawberries start to ripen, an occasional liquid feed or an application of strawberry fertiliser will help with plant health and fruit size; Cover with bird netting. Spray grapes and berryfruit with a fungicide every 14 days to prevent downy + powdery mildew and blackspot. After petal fall on deciduous fruit trees (e.g. apples, plums, pears) apply a fungicide to prevent the early build up of summer diseases. For dry sites or pots apply a wetting agent or mulch to fully utilise the available water. Mulching also helps to suppress weeds.
